The LEAP model is based on the theoretical foundations of the nature of disciplinary practices and the role of metacognition in the practices. It has been developed through three rigorous iterations of design based research (DBR) administered for a ten years by the TELeaD research group at EdTech IIT Bombay. DBR is a systematic and pragmatic research approach with the dual goals of designing effective learning environments, and developing local learning theories of how learning happens in the learning environment (Cobb et al, 2003). DBR proceeds through iterative cycles of Analysis & Exploration, Design & Development and Evaluation & Reflection, that allows researchers to simultaneously refine the design and the local learning theories (McKenney & Reeves, 2014). Details of the design based research, in general, can be found here.
